Bank accounts and sending money home: real-name verification, your designated bank and the yearly transfer limits
Last checked: 20 October 2026 · compared against 6 official sources opened that day
To be paid, pay your bills and support family abroad, you need a bank account in your own name. Each bank has its own requirements for foreign customers, but they all work within the same legal framework. We checked the current Real Name Financial Transactions Act, the Electronic Financial Transactions Act, the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act Decree and the Foreign Exchange Transaction Regulation on 20 October 2026.
Scope of this guide
This is general information, not financial advice. We do not cover specific products, fees, exchange rates or interest, and we do not recommend any provider. Banks may apply their own internal requirements, so ask the bank before you go. The transfer limits below come from the Foreign Exchange Transaction Regulation in force from 16 September 2026; it changes often, so confirm with your bank before sending money.
Real-name verification
Article 3 of the Real Name Financial Transactions Act requires financial institutions to deal with customers under their real name. For foreigners, Article 3 of the Decree defines this as the name and registration number on the immigration register, or, before a residence card is issued, the name and number on your passport or ID. If you opened an account with your passport, update it with your registration number once you have one, and update it again when you renew your passport or extend your stay.
Before you open an account
Bring your residence card (or passport before registration), a phone number in your own name for verification texts, your current registered address, and any document the bank asks for to confirm the purpose of the account, such as proof of employment for a salary account or proof of enrolment for students. Requirements differ by bank; ask what daily transfer and withdrawal limits a new account has and what you need to raise them.
Never lend your account
Article 6(3) of the Electronic Financial Transactions Act forbids transferring, renting out for payment, or lending for criminal use any means of access to an account, such as a bankbook, card or authentication tool, and forbids brokering or advertising this. Under Article 49(4) this is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won. Offers to "rent your account" or "sell it before you leave Korea" are a common route into fraud cases, and the account holder can be investigated. Close your accounts yourself when you leave.
Are you a foreign resident?
Article 10 of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act Decree treats foreigners who work in Korea or have stayed for six months or more as residents, with exceptions such as diplomats. The Regulation calls them foreign residents and applies different transfer rules to them. The often-quoted rule allowing transfers of up to US$100,000 a year without documents (Article 4-3) expressly excludes foreign residents.
Sending your salary
Under Article 4-4(1) of the Regulation, a foreign resident may send money abroad after showing the bank documents that prove how the money was obtained. Item 3 covers pay from work in Korea, self-employment income, and Korean social insurance or pension benefits, sent through your designated foreign exchange bank, the one bank you designate for foreign transactions. Ask that bank which documents it accepts as proof of income. Departure guarantee insurance paid to EPS workers does not have to go through the designated bank.
Sending without proof: US$50,000 a year
Article 4-4(2) lets foreign residents send up to US$50,000 a year in other cases, through their designated bank or a designated credit card company; some card spending abroad can count toward this, so check your running total with the bank. Article 4-4(3) also allows travel expenses of up to US$10,000.
Receiving money from abroad
Under Article 4-4(4), foreign residents can receive up to US$5,000 per transfer, or bring their own funds in from abroad, without payment documents. For larger amounts the bank may ask the reason, so ask senders to state the purpose. Keep records of money received from abroad, because it counts as a documented source if you later send it out again.
Safe transfers
Use registered institutions: Article 8 of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act requires anyone doing foreign exchange business to register, and unregistered business is punishable. Compare the total cost, including fees and exchange rates, by the amount the recipient actually receives. Double-check the recipient's name, account number and bank code, keep receipts with your payslips, and hang up on callers claiming to be police or immigration officers who ask you to transfer money.
