English version

Extending your period of stay: timing, online versus in-person applications and documents

Last checked: 20 October 2026 · compared against 5 official sources opened that day

To stay beyond the period you were granted, you need an extension of stay. The rules are short, but every year people pay fines because they did not know when they could apply, why the online deadline is a day earlier, or that their status cannot apply online. We rechecked the HiKorea extension pages, the Immigration Act and its Enforcement Rules on 20 October 2026.

The basic rule: from four months before expiry to the expiry date

Article 25 of the Immigration Act requires an extension to be approved before your period of stay ends. HiKorea gives the window as four months before expiry up to the expiry date itself, and a fine applies if you apply after expiry. You must be in Korea on the day you apply: neither applications from abroad nor proxy applications from abroad are possible. If you leave Korea after applying online but before a decision, the application may be returned.

Online and booked visits have earlier deadlines

HiKorea's page for registered foreigners says online applications are accepted from four months before expiry until one working day before expiry, excluding weekends and public holidays, and booked visits until one working day before expiry. So although the basic rule says "until the expiry date", both practical routes close on the last working day before it. If you expire on a Monday, your last day is the Friday before, or earlier if that Friday is a holiday. Online applications are received 07:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, and visits can be booked any day. Processing takes 10 days for ordinary cases and up to two months when investigation is needed.

A worked example

Suppose your card says your stay ends on Monday 15 March 2027. You may apply from 15 November 2026, four months earlier; that is a Sunday and online applications are processed on weekdays, so in practice you can submit online from Monday 16 November. Your last application day is Friday 12 March 2027, the working day before expiry, or earlier if a public holiday falls in between. Put three reminders in your phone: start gathering documents, target application date and last possible day.

Statuses that cannot apply online

HiKorea lists these exclusions for online extension: D-3, D-8, E-7, F-2, F-6, F-2-4 (refugee), F-4, F-5 and G-1. With these you need a booked visit to the immigration office. F-4 holders with a domestic residence report card have their own online menu. Some statuses, such as F-6, cannot use a proxy, so check before you send someone in your place.

Documents

Annex 5-2 to the Enforcement Rules requires a passport and residence card (and a school certificate for children in primary or secondary school) for every application, plus proof of address for an extension. Each status adds its own documents, such as an employment contract for work visas or enrolment and financial documents for students. Documents issued abroad need an apostille or consular confirmation. Papers the officer can check through shared government data need not be submitted unless you refuse that check. See "documents by status" on HiKorea for your exact list.

When to apply

Our recommendation, which is not an official rule, is to start gathering slow documents four months before expiry, apply by two months before if anything has changed in your job or school (since investigations can take two months), and in ordinary cases apply at least 30 days before expiry. Treat the last working day as an emergency deadline only. If the online system fails, HiKorea asks you to report it to the Immigration Contact Center on 1345 (weekdays 09:00 to 22:00, charged).

Reports to make before you extend

Delays often come from reports that should have been made earlier. Under Article 36 of the Immigration Act you must report a new address within 15 days of moving in, to the local district or community office or to the immigration office, and the address on your proof of residence must match. Under Article 35 you must report changes to your name, sex, date of birth, nationality, or passport number, issue date or expiry within 15 days, so if you renewed your passport, report it before you apply for an extension.

Track your family's dates separately

Your spouse's and children's periods of stay may end on different days from yours, so list every card's expiry date in one place and start from the earliest. Under Article 33, a residence card need not be issued to a foreign child under 17, and a child who reaches 17 without one must apply for it within 90 days. Children at primary or secondary school also need a school certificate for an extension.

Permanent residents reissue their card instead

Permanent residents do not extend their stay. Article 33 of the Immigration Act makes the permanent residence card valid for 10 years and requires you to have it reissued before it expires, so put that date in your calendar too.

Common mistakes

Remembering only "until the expiry date" and missing a weekend expiry; booking a trip abroad just before expiry; waiting for an online route that your status (E-7, F-2, F-6 and others) cannot use; failing to report a move, so your proof of address does not match (see the 15-day rule in our first-month checklist); and bringing foreign documents without an apostille or consular confirmation.
